Travel tips

Why Travellers Love Kerala

Travellers choose Kerala for three concrete reasons: the Alleppey–Kumarakom houseboat network, the Munnar tea country in the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea beaches around Kovalam and Varkala. Airlines such as IndiGo and Air India connect Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram to major Indian cities, making short breaks practical.

  1. Book houseboats through licensed operators

Kerala Tourism lists houseboat information and licensed operators. Confirm crew, meals and air-conditioning before paying.

    Booking
  2. Use Kochi as the central arrival hub

Cochin International Airport (COK) connects to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai with frequent flights, reducing transfer time to Alleppey and Munnar.

    Transport
  3. Add one hill station and one beach

Munnar for tea estates and Kovalam or Varkala for the Arabian Sea give two different climates in one trip.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Kerala

Kerala's top places span backwaters, hill stations, heritage towns and beaches. Alleppey and Kumarakom cover houseboats; Munnar and Thekkady cover hills and wildlife; Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam, Varkala, Wayanad and Kozhikode add heritage, coast and northern access. Plan 5–8 days to combine three or four.

  1. Central Kerala backwaters

    Alleppey (Alappuzha)

The main houseboat hub, with a network of canals, paddy fields and lake routes. Kerala Tourism's houseboat pages describe the Alleppey–Kumarakom belt as the standard overnight cruise route.

    Best forHouseboats, couples, families

Book an overnight houseboat rather than a day cruise to experience sunset and morning on the backwaters.

  2. Vembanad Lake

    Kumarakom

A quieter backwater base on Vembanad Lake, with bird sanctuary access and resort-style stays. It sits within the same houseboat network as Alleppey.

    Best forBackwater resorts, birdwatching

Choose Kumarakom if you want a calmer stay and easy birdwatching; choose Alleppey for more houseboat choice.

  3. Western Ghats, Idukki district

    Munnar

A hill station surrounded by tea estates at higher elevation, with cool mornings compared with the coast. Kerala's highest point reaches 2,695 m in the Ghats.

Best forTea estates, hill views, couples

Carry a light jacket for mornings and evenings; estate roads can be slow in the afternoon.

  4. Idukki district

    Thekkady

Gateway to Periyar wildlife area, with boat safaris and spice plantation visits. Forest entry often requires photo ID at the gate.

    Best forWildlife, spice plantations

Book the earliest boat slot for calmer water and better wildlife visibility.

  5. Central Kerala coast

    Kochi (Cochin)

A heritage port city with Fort Kochi, Chinese fishing nets and Kathakali performances. COK airport is the main gateway for central Kerala.

    Best forHeritage, culture, first-time visitors

Stay in Fort Kochi for walkable heritage; use Ernakulam for rail and business access.

  6. Southern Kerala

    Thiruvananthapuram

The state capital, served by TRV airport, with Padmanabhaswamy Temple and museum districts. It is a practical base for southern Kerala and Kovalam.

Best forHeritage, temple visits, southern gateway

Combine the temple and museum circuit in one day, then move to Kovalam for the coast.

  7. South of Thiruvananthapuram

    Kovalam

A beach town with a lighthouse and crescent bays, close to TRV airport. It is one of Kerala's most established beach bases.

    Best forBeaches, Ayurveda, families

Swim only in lifeguarded zones; currents can be strong outside marked areas.

  8. South Kerala coast

    Varkala

A cliffside beach town with a promenade above the Arabian Sea, popular with longer-stay travellers. It sits north of Thiruvananthapuram on the coastal route.

Best forCliff stays, solo travel, longer breaks

The cliff path has steps and uneven sections; wear grip footwear for the descent to the beach.

  9. Northern Kerala, Western Ghats

    Wayanad

A hill district with forests, caves and plantation stays, accessed from Kozhikode or Kannur. It offers a cooler alternative to the coast.

    Best forNature, trekking, plantation stays

Plan for winding ghat roads; keep buffer time if arriving from Kozhikode.

  10. Northern Kerala coast

    Kozhikode (Calicut)

A historic port city with a food culture and access via CCJ airport. It is a practical base for northern Kerala and Wayanad.

    Best forFood, northern gateway, heritage

Use Kozhikode as the arrival point for Wayanad rather than driving up from Kochi.

First-hand advice

From our travel specialists

What our team sees when planning these trips, beyond what the guidebooks say.

Killol DesaiTravel Consultation Expert5 years of expertise in planning customized itineraries for clients

Confirmed 11 Oct 2026

  1. Families learn that comfort and pacing matter more than fitting every famous stop into the itinerary: senior travellers may prefer avoiding an overnight houseboat because it can remain moored near shore, while long drives should not be rushed. Couples and families should confirm hotel and boat quality in advance, since last-minute room changes may not solve poor accommodation.

  2. Travellers commonly wish they had known that Kerala’s stops are farther apart than they appear and that road journeys can take much longer, especially in monsoon rain. They also recommend checking houseboat condition and service carefully rather than assuming every Alleppey boat is comfortable or well maintained.

  3. Alleppey’s overnight houseboat experience disappoints some travellers because of poor maintenance, dirty water, confined damp rooms, mosquitoes and limited movement after docking. Some prefer a shorter daytime backwater or narrow-canal boat trip, while others recommend focusing on well-reviewed operators and accommodation instead.

  4. The recurring mistake is packing Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and sometimes Wayanad into a short trip, leaving too little time for long road transfers. Travellers also fail to check that Alleppey houseboats must return to the jetty by 6 PM, so an overnight booking may not mean cruising overnight.

Still unsure?

Ask a specialist anything about this trip — there’s no obligation.

Ask a specialist
What is the best time to visit Kerala?

October to March is the best time to visit Kerala for comfortable sightseeing, beaches, backwaters and wildlife. December and January are peak season with the highest prices and crowds. June to September is the southwest monsoon, and October to November receives the northeast monsoon.

How many days are enough for a Kerala trip?

Five to eight days is enough for a Kerala trip covering Kochi, Alleppey, Munnar and one beach base. A shorter 4-day break works if you limit yourself to Kochi and Alleppey. Add two days if you want Wayanad or Thekkady as well.

What is the cost of a Kerala trip in 2026?

A 6-day Kerala trip in 2026 costs roughly ₹28,000–₹45,000 per person for budget travel, ₹55,000–₹85,000 for mid-range and ₹1,20,000 and above for luxury, on twin-sharing with return flights from Delhi or Mumbai. These are indicative travel-budget estimates, not Tripstor package offers.

Which airport should I fly into for Kerala?

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the main gateway for central Kerala, including Kochi, Alleppey and Munnar. Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) serves southern Kerala and Kovalam. Kannur (CNN) and Calicut/Kozhikode (CCJ) serve northern Kerala and Wayanad.

Is Kerala good for a honeymoon?

Kerala suits honeymoons with private houseboats in Alleppey, backwater resorts in Kumarakom and hill stays in Munnar. Mid-range and luxury tiers offer air-conditioned houseboat cabins and premium resorts. December and January are the most popular months, so book early for those dates.

What should I pack for Kerala?

Pack light cotton clothes, rain protection for monsoon months, a light jacket for Munnar and Wayanad mornings, and grip footwear for Varkala's cliff path. Carry a government photo ID for hotels and forest entries, plus a local SIM or eSIM for connectivity.

Is Kerala safe for solo travellers?

Kerala is generally considered safe for solo travellers, with reliable transport and widespread English usage in tourism areas. Use licensed houseboats, swim only in lifeguarded beach zones and follow local advice at night. As with any destination, no universal safety guarantee applies.

What food should I try in Kerala?

Try appam with stew, puttu with kadala curry, Kerala sadya, fish molee and Malabar biryani. Vegetarian travellers will find sadya and tiffin options widely available. Confirm no fish stock or coconut oil cross-use if that matters to your diet.
